June 14, (THEWILL) – Darwin Nunez of Uruguay has officially been confirmed to have joined Liverpool from Benfica in a deal that could be valued up to £86 million.
Last season, the 22-year-old scored 34 goals in 41 games across all competitions, prompting interest from the majority of the game’s best clubs. Chelsea and Manchester United were both linked with a move for Nunez, but the Uruguayan ultimately selected Liverpool.
Benfica later announced a deal of €75 million (£64 million) with an additional €25 million (£21 million) in add-ons had been finalised before Nunez arrived in Liverpool on Tuesday for his physical. Liverpool has now confirmed that he has signed a contract.
It is Liverpool’s second summer acquisition, following the arrival of Fulham’s young Fabio Carvalho. The focus will now shift to prospective departures, with Sadio Mane’s desire to depart being a top priority.
The Senegal international has stated his desire to leave, with Bayern Munich pushing to complete a deal ahead of the new season as they prepare for the likely departure of their own star forward, Robert Lewandowski. They are keen to keep Mane and will only let him go for a figure in excess of £40m.
