April 28, (THEWILL) – Liverpool are hoping to extend Jurgen Klopp’s stay at the club beyond 2024 by agreeing to a new deal with the German tactician, whose time at Anfield has been richly rewarding.
The Reds manager is said to have shown an interest in extending his contract with the Reds, where he has been in charge since October 2015.
Mike Gordon, the president of Fenway Sports Group (FSG) and a key figure in the club’s management, was in attendance at Wednesday’s Champions League semi-final match against Villarreal, and sat next to Klopp’s agent Marc Kosicke.
Gordon was instrumental in securing Klopp’s last contract extension in December 2019 and will once again manage the negotiations, with FSG content to let the German stay in control for as long as he sees appropriate.
Klopp, whose side is still chasing an unprecedented quadruple after defeating Villarreal 2-0, had been expected to leave when his current contract expires in just over two years. Since arriving in 2015, he has guided Liverpool to a sixth Champions League title, a first-ever FIFA Club World Cup victory, and the end of a 30-year wait to be crowned English champions.
Following a season spent behind closed doors, the Reds boss revealed in February that his excitement had diminished. He said: “I couldn’t have cared less at that moment, just get through it and that is absolutely true. Why shouldn’t managers be different? But for all of us it was the same. We were all really drained. Just finished. Done.”
However, there has been a recent shift in tone. Klopp looked to be open to the notion of extending his tenure in March.
The manager said: “If I have the energy levels for it. That is important. I love what I do but I’ve said a couple of times there must be something else out there in the world, to be honest, apart from always thinking about properly skilled, good-looking, fantastically nice football players.”
The news that Klopp is considering a new contract will come as a huge boost to Liverpool, who have already won the Carabao Cup and advanced to the FA Cup final this season, and are currently challenging Manchester City for the Premier League crown with a strong foot in the UEFA Champions League final.
