June 12, (THEWILL) – Liverpool and Benfica have negotiated a fee for Darwin Nunez, who will now have a medical before completing a deal worth up to €100 million.
Last season, the 22-year-old was a Benfica goal machine, scoring 26 times in 28 games in the Primeira Liga and 34 times in all competitions. These have made him one of the hottest properties in the summer transfer market.
Manchester United were interested in signing Nunez, but Liverpool moved quickly to sign him after it was revealed that Sadio Mane wanted to leave Anfield, and the Reds have finally negotiated a fee with Benfica following protracted negotiations.
Benfica will get €80 million (£68 million) from Liverpool, with a further €20 million (£17 million) due in potential bonuses and add-ons, and Nunez will now undergo a physical before signing a six-year contract, which might happen as soon as Monday, making him the most expensive buy in Liverpool’s history, surpassing the £75 million paid for Virgil van Dijk at the end of 2017.
Despite two initial bids being rejected, Nunez’s anticipated arrival could pave the way for Mane to join Bayern Munich. The Senegalese forward has informed the club that he does not seek to renew his contract, which has only one year left on it, and that he wishes to pursue a new challenge.
