June 12, (THEWILL) – On Sunday, Tim Van Rijthoven capped off an incredible week at the Libema Open in ‘s-Hertogenbosch by defeating Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 6-1 to claim his first ATP Tour title.
On his second appearance in a tour-level main draw, the Dutch wild card was playing in his first championship match. In front of an exuberant home crowd, he showed no signs of nerves on route to a 65-minute triumph over a player who will retake the top spot in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings on Monday.
Van Rijthoven defeated Matthew Ebden, Taylor Fritz, Hugo Gaston, and Felix Auger-Aliassime to win the ATP 250 event in ‘s-Hertogenbosch for the first time for a Dutchman since Sjeng Schalken in 2003.
Van Rijthoven’s victory over Medvedev was aided by his ability to pressure the Russian’s standard service game. In the match, the Dutchman created ten break point opportunities, four of which he converted.
Medvedev’s dry run of titles continues in 2022, but Van Rijthoven will be heartened by how he performed in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, which concluded in his first tour-level final match appearance since the Australian Open in January, as he finished as the lowest-ranked tour-level titlist of the season.
