March 20, (THEWILL) – With the retirement of Hugo Lloris from international football, the French national team is in need of a new captain and the name of star forward, Kylian Mbappe, has come up frequently.
The 24-year-old Mbappe has been touted as a potential candidate, but national coach, Didier Deschamps, is insistent on not being swayed by the player’s recent appearance as Paris Saint-Germain skipper.
Speaking recently, Lloris praised Mbappe for his leadership qualities, stating that the young player was becoming “more powerful in every aspect on and off the pitch.” However, Deschamps remains tight-lipped on the identity of the new captain, stating that he will discuss the matter with the concerned players before making a decision.
While Mbappe was PSG captain in their recent match against Rennes, Deschamps made it clear that club level performance will not be a determining factor in his decision. The coach emphasised that there are different forms of captaincy and that he will take into account the players’ communication skills and ability to take on responsibility.
France will face Netherlands in qualifying for Euro 2024 on Friday.
