Mahrez's Brace Against Sudan

December 24, (THEWILL) — Algeria began their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a convincing 3-0 victory over Sudan at the Stade Prince Moulay El Hassan. Riyad Mahrez, the former Manchester City forward, scored twice to lead his country to the top of Group E.

Sudan’s task became significantly harder when Salah Adil received a second yellow card in the 39th minute following a late challenge on Rayan Ait-Nouri.

Mahrez opened the scoring after just two minutes, collecting a backheel from Hicham Boudaoui before curling the ball into the bottom-left corner.

Algeria dominated possession but struggled to convert their numerical advantage into clear chances until the 60th minute. Mohammed Amoura delivered an exceptional outside-of-the-foot pass to Mahrez, who controlled the ball and finished calmly to double the lead.

Ibrahim Maza wrapped up the victory five minutes from time, converting a headed knockdown from Baghdad Bounedjah. Amoura struck the post late on with a well-worked corner routine, though the result was already beyond doubt. Algeria will face Burkina Faso in their next group fixture.
