July 1, (THEWILL) – The free transfer of goalkeeper Stefan Ortega, from Arminia Bielefeld, to Manchester City, has been finalised, with the English champions announcing that he has signed a three-year deal at Etihad.
With the expiration of his contract with Arminia on June 30, the 29-year-old will now serve as Ederson’s assistant in City. Zack Steffen, a member of the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) had previously served in that capacity as City’s reserve keeper for the past two seasons.
An enthusiastic Ortega shared his excitement about the transfer when he said: “This is a fantastic move for me. Manchester City are an amazing team – a squad with world-class quality in every area. To be given the chance to join this group of players and help continue the club’s success is a dream for me.
“I have enjoyed my time in Germany and I want to thank the Arminia Bielefeld fans for their support. But this new challenge of coming to City and playing in the Premier League is too good for me to ignore. I can’t wait to get started, meet my teammates and begin working with Pep and his backroom staff.”
The keeper helped Arminia win the second division Bundesliga title in 2019/2020, which allowed them to rejoin the Bundesliga for the first time in 11 years and they finished 15th in their first season back in the top division before being relegated. Despite that, Ortega received praise for his efforts, with his distribution standing out in particular.
