October 04, (THEWILL) – Defending English Premier League champions Manchester City has filed a formal complaint after a Liverpool supporter allegedly spat at a member of their staff during Sunday’s 2-2 matchday seven tie at Anfield.
THEWILL recalls that the game’s tempo picked up in the second half, especially when City manager Pep Guardiola lost his cool on the touchline after James Milner was not given a second yellow card for a harsh challenge on Bernardo Silva not long before the home side took a 2-1 lead.
Guardiola was given a yellow card himself, but it is claimed that a City employee was spat on while the situation was about to escalate.
Liverpool is looking into the accusation and will review CCTV evidence, but City manager Pep Guardiola is certain that any fan found culpable will be adequately punished.
“I didn’t see it but I heard about it,” Guardiola said. “The people told me this happened. I am pretty sure Liverpool FC is going to take a measure against this person. I know Liverpool is greater than this action. In every club there are people who make a bad action because of their emotions.”
After a poor first half, Sadio Mane gave the home side the lead with half an hour to go, before Phil Foden equalised for the Premier League champions.
In the 76th minute, Mohamed Salah’s spectacular solo goal restored Liverpool’s lead, but five minutes later, Kevin De Bruyne’s deflected strike ensured that the points were shared.
