The Red Devils had to put in a lot of effort to win at Elland Road on Sunday. In sweltering temperatures in Yorkshire, Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes put them 2-0 up at halftime, but Rodrigo and Raphinha equalised with quickfire strikes two minutes apart early in the second half.
However, Fred scored immediately after coming off the bench, and Anthony Elanga added a fourth late in the game to secure full points for Ralf Rangnick’s side in their struggle to finish in the top four this season.
Chelsea, who have won the second-most matches (610), is 90 wins behind United at Old Trafford, with Arsenal in third place on 609 so far.
Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs holds the record for most games won in the competition, with 407 triumphs in 632 appearances. With 321 victories, Paul Scholes ranks second on the list.
They have won 28 games in five Premier League seasons, the most they have ever had in a single campaign, and they have done it in consecutive seasons (2011/2012 and 2012/2013, which was the campaign in which they last won the title).
United has beaten Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur, and Everton on 37 occasions, as well as every other team they have faced in the competition.
399 of their 700 victories have occurred at Old Trafford, while Villa Park (17) and Goodison Park (17) are their most successful away locations.
Huddersfield Town’s John Smith’s Stadium is the only site where United has played many games in the competition and never won.
