July 18, (THEWILL) — Manchester United have finalised a £71 million transfer agreement with Brentford for Cameroon international, Bryan Mbeumo, bringing the 25-year-old winger to Old Trafford after weeks of intensive negotiations. The deal comprises an initial £65 million fee spread across four instalments, with an additional £6 million available in performance-related bonuses. Mbeumo becomes United’s third major signing of the summer transfer window, following the acquisitions of Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers and teenage full-back Diego Leon from Paraguayan side Cerro Porteno.
The protracted transfer saga concluded after United’s initial offers of £45 million plus £10 million in add-ons and a subsequent £55 million plus £7.5 million proposal were both rejected by Brentford. The west London club had been determined to exceed the £62.5 million fee United paid for Cunha earlier in the window, eventually accepting terms that surpass their previous record sale. Mbeumo had made his preference clear to both Brentford and interested clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, and Newcastle United, that he would only leave the Gtech Community Stadium for Manchester United.
The Cameroonian international enjoyed a breakthrough 2024/25 Premier League campaign, appearing in all 38 league matches and contributing 20 goals and eight assists that helped Brentford finish 10th in the table. His transformation from an inconsistent winger to a reliable goalscorer represents one of the most notable individual improvements in recent English Premier League seasons. Mbeumo’s penalty-taking ability has been particularly impressive, with only one miss from 12 attempts during his time at Brentford.
Since joining Brentford from French club Troyes in 2019, Mbeumo has developed into a versatile forward capable of operating across multiple attacking positions. His 242 appearances for the Bees have yielded 70 goals and 51 assists in all competitions, including crucial contributions during their promotion to the EPL in 2021. The player’s adaptability has seen him deployed effectively on the right wing, in support striker roles, and occasionally in more defensive positions when tactical situations demanded.
For Brentford, Mbeumo’s departure represents another significant loss following the recent exits of Christian Eriksen, Ivan Toney, and David Raya, though the transfer fee doubles their previous record sale of £33.6 million received for Toney’s move to Saudi Arabian club Al Ahli. United manager Ruben Amorim gains a proven EPL player who has demonstrated consistent availability, missing just 16 matches across four top-flight seasons. The signing addresses United’s need for attacking width and goal threat from wide positions ahead of their 2025/2026 campaign preparations.
