January 06, (THEWILL) – Richard Arnold has been named as Manchester United’s new Chief Executive. He takes over from Ed Woodward, who announced his retirement last April, as THEWILL reported.
Arnold began his career with United in 2007 as Group Commercial Director before being elevated to Group Managing Director in 2013. He will now take over the club’s day-to-day operations from Woodward, with the transition taking place on February 1st.
“I am honoured to have the chance to serve this great club and its fans. I am determined to return that honour in any way I can,” Arnold told the club’s website about the elevation.
Joel Glazer, United’s co-chairman, said, “I would like to thank Ed for his tireless work on behalf of Manchester United during his nine years as Executive Vice-Chairman and 16 years with the club.
“We are now looking forward to Richard and his leadership team opening a new phase in the club’s evolution, with ambitious plans for investment in Old Trafford, the strengthening of our engagement with fans, and continued drive towards our most important objective – winning on the pitch.”
Arnold is anticipated to take a different approach to things than Woodward, starting with a job title that indicates his primary concentration on business rather than football.
The 51-year-old intends to give Football Director John Murtough more freedom and autonomy over the organisation’s athletic operations.
