February 25, (THEWILL) – Manchester United has terminated their sponsorship agreement with Aeroflot, a Russian airline.
The announcement was verified by the club in a statement posted on their official website on Friday, as the world condemns Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The following was included in the statement:
“In light of events in Ukraine, we have withdrawn Aeroflot’s sponsorship rights. We share the concerns of our fans around the world and extend our sympathies to those affected.”
United and Aeroflot have been partners since 2013, when United became one of the club’s global partners. The contract was extended in 2017, and the value of the contract is expected to be in the range of £30 million.
United has previously flown with Aeroflot, however it is believed that a different carrier flew the Red Devils to and from their Champions League Round of 16 first-leg encounter against Atletico Madrid.
Schalke is one of the other football clubs to cut ties with Russian corporations, with the German Bundesliga side terminating their sponsorship relationship with Gazprom.
On Saturday, Ralf Rangnick’s squad will face Watford at Old Trafford in Premier League play.
