August 13, (THEWILL) – Manchester United have opened discussions with Bayern Munich regarding the transfer of French defender, Benjamin Pavard.

The 26-year-old World Cup winner has entered the final year of his contract with the German champions. United have identified Pavard as an option to strengthen their defence following the impending departure of Harry Maguire. The Englishman is close to finalising a £30 million move to West Ham United.

Pavard’s versatility and experience appeal to United manager, Erik ten Hag. The Frenchman can play both centre-back and right-back. This would provide cover across the defence. Bayern value Pavard at £30 million. United have initially proposed £25.9 million. This difference has not deterred both sides from continuing negotiations.

Pavard would face competition for a starting role at Old Trafford with Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane expected to start when available. United also maintain interest in other centre-back targets like Villarreal’s Pau Torres. But his flexibility and availability make him an intriguing transfer option.
