January 03, (THEWILL) – Manchester United have reached an agreement with the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT) that will allow goalkeeper Andre Onana to represent his country at the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament. The agreement ensures Onana will be available for key United fixtures before departing.
The 27-year-old will feature in United’s FA Cup third-round match against Wigan Athletic on January 9, before facing Tottenham Hotspur in the English Premier League on January 14. Onana will then leave for AFCON, in time for Cameroon’s first match on January 15 against Guinea.
United signed Onana last July with the understanding he had retired from international duty. However, Onana opted to return after being persuaded by FECAFOOT. United respects Onana’s decision to represent his country.
Equally, FECAFOOT recognised Onana’s club commitments. The agreed compromise enables Onana to play for both club and country while minimising disruption to United. If Cameroon fails to progress from their group, Onana can return quickly and not miss that many United matches.
Red Devils’ manager Erik ten Hag has expressed full confidence in backup goalkeeper Altay Bayindir to deputise in Onana’s absence. 37-year-old Tom Heaton provides an additional option on the bench.
