December 22, (THEWILL) – In their matchday programme for Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup match against Burnley, Manchester United bid their farewells to Cristiano Ronaldo.
As THEWILL reported, the Portuguese star was let go by the Red Devils in late November after he disparaged the team in a viral interview with Piers Morgan. United’s first official game after Ronaldo’s departure was the cup encounter against Burnley, and the occasion was marked by a reminder of how that relationship ended.
In the programme notes, United said: “Cristiano Ronaldo left the club by mutual agreement last month. The Portuguese superstar scored 145 goals across two spells and 436 appearances and helped us win three Premier League titles, one FA Cup, two League Cups, the Champions League and the FIFA Club World Cup. Ronaldo was also crowned Ballon d’Or winner in 2008.
“In a statement on November 22, the club put on record its gratitude for Cristiano’s immense contribution and wished him and his family well for the future.”
Ronaldo has not announced where he will play after a poor World Cup campaign with Portugal. The illustrious forward struggled in Qatar and was replaced by Goncalo Ramos who scored three goals in a 6-1 thumping of Switzerland in the round of 16. However, Morocco eliminated the Selecao from the competition on penalties.
