September 22, (THEWILL) – Manchester United are keen to agree a new contract with promising young midfielder, Hannibal Mejbri, sources close to the club have confirmed.
The 20-year-old Tunisian international has impressed recently and the club want to secure his long-term future. Hannibal scored his first senior goal for United during last weekend’s 3-1 defeat at Brighton and Hove Albion. Manager, Erik ten Hag, is known to rate Hannibal highly and views him as a key part of the club’s future.
His current deal expires next summer, though United have the option to extend it by 12 months. United have made a difficult start to the new season, lacking cohesion in midfield. Big money summer signing, Mason Mount, only recently returned from injury, while key target, Sofyan Amrabat, arrived late on loan. Ten Hag has already used six central midfielders this term.
Hannibal joined United from Monaco in 2019 for an initial £4.35m. This fee could potentially rise to £8.7m if certain clauses are met. The Tunisian is said to be keen to establish himself at Old Trafford. Tying him down to a new long-term contract would be a boost for Ten Hag.
With veteran midfielder, Casemiro, aging and injury concerns over youngster, Kobbie Mainoo, Hannibal’s continued development could be crucial for United’s midfield future. Agreeing a new deal would protect one of their most promising academy graduates.
