September 22, (THEWILL) – Former Manchester United goalkeeper, David de Gea, remains without a club after leaving Old Trafford at the end of last season.
The Spaniard had agreed terms on a new contract, but United withdrew their offer and failed to finalise a fresh deal. The keeper has rejected approaches from clubs in the Saudi and Qatari leagues, preferring to stay in Europe, as he hopes to play UEFA Champions League football again.
However, the 32-year-old has yet to receive an appropriate offer and sources say he would contemplate retirement if this continues into the January transfer window. During 12 years at United, De Gea won an English Premier League title, FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League. He last played for Spain in 2020 and was omitted from their World Cup squad.
De Gea’s successor at United, Andre Onana, has made a rocky start, most recently conceding a soft goal in their UEFA Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich. While Onana is strong with his feet, De Gea’s shot-stopping abilities were impressive during his United career.
With no club and no international call-ups on the horizon, De Gea’s decorated career could be drawing to a premature close unless an attractive opportunity arises over the next few months.
