August 29, (THEWILL) – Manchester United have been presented with the opportunity to sign Tottenham Hotspur midfielder, Pierre-Emile Højbjerg.

The 28-year-old Dane has two years remaining on his contract in north London, but would be allowed to depart this summer if Spurs receive a satisfactory offer. He has fallen down the pecking order at Spurs following the emergence of 20-year-old Pape Matar Sarr. The Senegalese prospect is set to be rewarded with a new contract after impressing manager Ange Postecoglou.

With Yves Bissouma and Oliver Skipp also competing for a starting spot, Højbjerg’s first-team opportunities look limited. Fortunately, United are actively seeking reinforcements in central midfield and have pursued Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat. However, negotiations have progressed slowly despite the Moroccan’s eagerness to move to Old Trafford.

The Red Devils have also considered a move for Bayern Munich’s Ryan Gravenberch, who is unlikely to get many chances under manager Thomas Tuchel. A deal for Højbjerg may be complicated by Spurs’ preference to sell rather than loan him out. However, United boss Erik ten Hag previously coached the Danish international at Bayern Munich’s B team, so is familiar with his qualities.

Højbjerg could provide steel to a United midfield that has looked vulnerable in their opening three matches. With Luke Shaw injured again, United are also examining left-back options. Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella, Tottenham’s Sergio Reguilón and Barcelona’s Marcos Alonso have been offered on loan. Outgoings are also expected before the September 1st deadline, with Dean Henderson close to joining Crystal Palace and Harry Maguire linked with West Ham United.
