August 29, (THEWILL) – The Super Eagles of Nigeria will commence preparations on Monday, September 4, for their upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Sao Tome and Principe.
The team will assemble in Uyo for a training camp ahead of the match on 10 September at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium. Despite having already qualified for AFCON 2023 along with Guinea-Bissau, Nigeria will be keen to end their campaign on a high by defeating Sao Tome and Principe.
When the teams met earlier in the qualifiers, Nigeria won 10-0. With uncertainty surrounding the coaching situation after Jose Peseiro’s contract expired, the Nigeria Football Federation is expected to appoint an interim coach. Austin Eguavoen, Salisu Yusuf and Finidi George have been suggested as possibilities.
The match in Uyo will mark the Super Eagles’ return to the stadium after several years away. Uyo hosted all of Nigeria’s 2018 World Cup qualifiers previously. The upcoming gathering and match will be an important part of preparations as Nigeria aim to win their first AFCON title since 2013.
