April 25, (THEWILL) – Manchester United are set to offer first-team goalkeeper, David De Gea, a new contract with reduced terms.
The Spaniard, who has been with the club for nearly a decade, has been in talks about a new deal since last year, with his current contract expiring at the end of this season. United have been looking to address its wage structure and have been negotiating a wage reduction from De Gea’s current £375,000-a-week earnings.
Although the 32-year-old has been through a few difficult moments this season, including in last week’s Europa League defeat against Sevilla, he is leading the Premier League’s clean-sheet table and has received public backing from his manager, Erik ten Hag. Talks with De Gea are said to be progressing well, with only minor details left to be ironed out.
United are also reportedly considering signing a goalkeeper to provide more competition for De Gea in the future. Meanwhile, De Gea himself has expressed his desire to stay at Old Trafford beyond this season, saying that he enjoys playing with a good manager, good players, and a great team spirit.
“Everyone fights until the end, and everyone is ready from the bench to perform well. It’s great to watch the team playing and performing well,” he said. A new deal with De Gea would be seen as a priority for United, with other areas of the squad considered to be a higher priority for strengthening ahead of next season.
