July 31, (THEWILL) – Bayern Munich held off a late comeback and defeated RB Leipzig 5-3 in the DFL-Supercup in a good outing for new forward, Sadio Mane, who scored his first competitive goal for the Bundesliga champions.
This summer, serial goal-scorer, Robert Lewandowski, exited Julian Nagelsmann’s team for Barcelona, but Mane, a €41 million transfer from Liverpool, showed that he will not have any troubles filling the vacuum left by the Pole.
The goal from the Senegalese doubled Bayern’s lead at the Red Bull Arena in the first half after Jamal Musiala had given the Bavarian juggernauts an early lead.
On the stroke of half-time, Benjamin Pavard made it 3-0, and when Marcel Halstenberg gave Leipzig a goal back, Serge Gnabry added a fourth for Bayern. A penalty goal from the skillful Christopher Nkunku and a late goal from Dani Olmo helped Domenico Tedesco’s team rally for what seemed a sensational comeback, but Leroy Sane scored Bayern’s fifth goal with the game’s final kick to confirm their victory.
The win meant that Bayern have been able to secure their third straight and 11th overall Supercup as the serial winners continue to establish their dominance in the German top flight in the beginning of life after Lewandowski.
