July 18, (THEWILL) – Mason Greenwood, the 22-year-old English striker, has signed for Marseille from Manchester United, the French club announced on Thursday.
The move comes after Greenwood spent last season on loan at Spanish side Getafe, where he scored 10 goals in 36 appearances.
Marseille confirmed the transfer on their official website and social media channels. The club described Greenwood as a “precocious talent” and an “English nugget”. He will wear the number 10 shirt for his new team, though details of the contract length and transfer fee were not disclosed.
Greenwood’s move to Marseille has sparked controversy among some fans and local officials. The player was suspended by United in January 2022 following allegations of attempted rape and sexual assault. However, prosecutors dropped all charges in February 2023. Greenwood has maintained his innocence, stating he did not do the things he was accused of.
Man Utd confirmed Greenwood’s departure on their website, simply wishing him “all the best in his future career”. The forward made 129 appearances for the Red Devils after debuting in 2019, scoring 35 goals. He also earned one cap for England in September 2020.
Greenwood’s arrival at Marseille coincides with the departure of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who was the club’s top scorer last season. The signing represents a significant addition to Marseille’s attacking options as they look to compete in Ligue 1 and European competitions in the 2024/2025 season.
