June 28, (THEWILL) – Brazil’s renowned forward, Marta, is poised to participate in her sixth World Cup, following her inclusion in Pia Sundhage’s team for the tournament.
The competition is set to commence on July 20, hosted by Australia and New Zealand. Marta, a six-time recipient of the FIFA World Player of the Year award, will spearhead Brazil’s pursuit of their inaugural Women’s World Cup title. She will be joined by other seasoned players including Debinha, Tamires, and Andressa Alves.
However, Sundhage, who has previously coached the U.S. and Sweden, has not confirmed whether Marta, the all-time Women’s World Cup top scorer, will be in the initial lineup. Sundhage expressed her admiration for Marta on Tuesday, stating: “Marta is the queen, she is an icon. Just being around her is contagious. If she will be in the starting lineup I don’t know, not yet. She will play the role I will give her and I am sure she will do well.”
In preparation for the tournament, Brazil will initiate a training camp this week. They are also scheduled to compete against Chile in a farewell friendly match on Sunday, prior to their departure for Australia.
