May 24, (THEWILL) – Napoli have claimed the Serie A title for 2024/2025 after defeating Cagliari 2-0 at home on Friday evening. Scott McTominay and Romelu Lukaku scored the goals that delivered Antonio Conte’s side their fourth Scudetto in club history.
The victory came on the same day Inter Milan defeated Como 2-0, but Napoli’s superior position at the top of the table meant three points would guarantee the championship.
McTominay opened the scoring in the 42nd minute with an acrobatic volley after meeting Matteo Politano’s cross from the right wing.
The goal came at a crucial moment when news of Inter’s opening goal had increased tension inside the stadium. Six minutes into the second half, Lukaku doubled the advantage with an individual effort, collecting Amir Rrahmani’s long ball before holding off two defenders and finishing past goalkeeper Alen Sherri.
The match began with early pressure from the hosts, though Giacomo Raspadori fired wide and Lukaku saw an effort blocked by Yerry Mina.
Antoine Makoumbou escaped a potential red card following a VAR review after a confrontation between both sets of players. Cagliari threatened late in stoppage time through Alessandro Deiola, but Alex Meret made the save to preserve the clean sheet. David Neres nearly added a third goal after his introduction from the bench, but Sherri denied his close-range attempt.
Conte has now won his fifth Serie A title across spells with Juventus, Chelsea, Inter Milan and Napoli.
The Italian coach achieved the feat in his debut season with the Naples club, leading them back to the summit of Italian football. The championship represents Napoli’s first Serie A title since their memorable 2022/2023 campaign under Luciano Spalletti when Victor Osimhen finished as capocannoniere.
McTominay and Lukaku have proven instrumental in the title’s success, with both players contributing regularly throughout the season. Inter Milan’s victory over Como was ultimately insufficient to prevent Conte’s men from claiming the trophy, leaving the defending champions to settle for second place.
