April 01, (THEWILL) – Russian tennis player, Daniil Medvedev, advanced to the final of the Miami Open after defeating compatriot, Karen Khachanov, in a closely fought contest on Friday.
Medvedev was the heavy favourite going into the match, but Khachanov made an assured start, losing no points on serve in the early stages of the first set. However, Medvedev managed to take an early lead and the pair were soon level at 5-5.
The Russian finally secured the first set in a tie-break after 61 minutes of play. Khachanov fought back to take the second set but ultimately lost the match in the decider. The match finished 7-6(5) 3-6 6-3 in favour of the fifth-ranked tennis player in the world.
Medvedev has been in excellent form, reaching five successive finals on the ATP Tour since February. The last player to do so was Ivan Lendl, in 1981. Medvedev will face either Carlos Alcaraz or Jannik Sinner in the final on Sunday. He spoke after the match, saying he was looking forward to the game and would prepare for the winner.
