April 01, (THEWILL) – Petra Kvitova made it to the final after making a stunning comeback from a first-set deficit to defeat Sorana Cirstea 7-5 6-4 in the semi-final of the Miami Open.
Cirstea took the lead in the opening set of the all-experienced heads semi-final match, breaking Kvitova’s serve to take a 5-2 lead. Kvitova bounced back, holding serve and then breaking Cirstea to level the score at 5-5. The two players then held their serves to set up a tie-break, which Kvitova won 7-3.
In the second set, Kvitova broke Cirstea’s serve early on and continued to dominate despite a brief comeback by the Romanian. Time had completely run out before Cirstea could find the extra burners for her own comeback.
Kvitova’s triumph over Cirstea marked an impressive return from a difficult position, earning her a place in the final of the Miami Open. Despite facing Rybakina, one of the most in-form players on the WTA Tour, Kvitova was upbeat about her chances of victory.
