September 18, (THEWILL) – An early Lionel Messi strike gave Paris Saint-Germain a 1-0 victory over Lyon, propelling them back to the top of Ligue 1.
The fixture took place at the Groupama Stadium and even though PSG had long runs of possession dominance, Christophe Galtier’s team had to hold off a tenacious Lyon in the second half to return home with all three points.
A deft one-two play with teammate Neymar was all Messi needed to ease into the danger area of Lyon and direct a first-time shot past Anthony Lopes to give PSG the lead after just five minutes.
As a result of their victory, PSG extended their winning streak to six games in all competitions, allowing them to leapfrog Marseille to the top of the league. Lyon’s loss came after eight straight home league triumphs, the highest number among the top five European leagues so far this season.
PSG will host Nice at the Parc des Princes when domestic football resumes on October 1 while Lyon will be on the road against Lens the following day.
