September 18, (THEWILL) – At San Siro on Sunday, Napoli defeated previously unbeaten AC Milan 2-1 to retake the top spot in Serie A with Giovanni Simeone’s 78th-minute header proving to be the difference.
In a strong first half, the defending champions had 11 shots compared to Napoli’s measly three, but just after the interval, Matteo Politano scored from 12 yards after Sergino Dest unnecessarily fouled Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.
Olivier Giroud tied the score for Milan in the 69th minute, but Luciano Spalletti’s team, which is still unbeaten in the league this season, went on to win, big thanks to a goal from substitute, Simeone.
As a result, Napoli moved up to first place in the rankings, passing Udinese and Atalanta, while Milan fell to fifth place following its first loss in 23 Serie A games.
In their next outing, Milan will visit Empoli in Serie A after the international break, and Napoli will host Torino.
