May 04, (THEWILL) – Fan protests at Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday, have led to reports that Lionel Messi will leave Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the season.

Some sources monitored by THEWILL suggest that the 35-year-old Argentina international has decided to depart the French capital as a free agent at the expiration of his current contract this season. It was earlier believed that Messi had agreed to extend his stay at PSG by a year, but he and the club have now chosen not to proceed with the arrangement.

Messi’s father had informed the club of his son’s decision several weeks ago. However, with Messi’s two-week suspension, slammed on the Argentine superstar by the French giants for travelling to Saudi Arabia without permission, matters have escalated with the question now being where does Messi move to when he becomes a free agent again.

While the 35-year-old has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia, where arch-rival, Cristiano Ronaldo, plays for Al-Nassr, a potential return to Barcelona is on the cards. Still, MLS side Inter Miami, may also be a possible destination.

PSG are said to want to bring in younger players as part of an overhaul to their big-spending transfer strategy, and selling Neymar, who is out injured, could be part of this strategy. Even after 71 games, since joining in 2021, and 31 goals scored, PSG fans did not hesitate to protest against Messi’s future at the club on Wednesday. It is uncertain, if Messi will play against Auxerre on May 21 after his suspension.
