April 27, (THEWILL) — The Michael Jackson biopic “Michael” opened to a record-breaking $217.4 million worldwide in its first weekend.
The film earned $97 million in North America and $120.4 million internationally, making it the biggest opening ever for a biopic.
It also passed “Oppenheimer” and “Bohemian Rhapsody” in global debut earnings.
“Michael” is a high-budget biopic of Michael Jackson’s life, produced with support from his estate and starring his nephew, Jaafar Jackson, in the lead role.
The story follows Jackson’s journey from his early days with the Jackson 5 to becoming a global music icon, with major concert moments recreated on screen.
Despite its strong box office performance, the film has received mixed reviews.
Critics have been largely negative, giving it a 38% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Many say it avoids the more difficult parts of Jackson’s life.
Audiences have responded very differently, giving it a 97% score with strong praise for its music and performances.
The film faced production challenges, including expensive reshoots that changed its ending.
A sequel is already in development, with more films being considered.
Even with the criticism, “Michael” has become one of the biggest global openings of the year and the most successful music biopic debut in history.
