November 14, (THEWILL) — Major League Soccer will shift its calendar from 2027 to align with top European competitions and FIFA international windows, following a vote by club owners on Thursday. The change, described by Commissioner, Don Garber, as among the most significant in the league’s history, aims to strengthen global competitiveness and improve transfer market opportunities.
The full system begins in the 2027/2028 season, with matches starting in July and concluding on Decision Day in April. The MLS Cup playoffs will run through May. A transition year in 2027, following the 2026 World Cup hosted across North America, will feature an abbreviated 14-match season from February to April with playoffs in May. A lengthy winter break will see minimal December fixtures and no matches through January and February, protecting clubs in colder climates such as Minnesota United, Toronto FC and Columbus Crew.
Reports indicate the league will adopt a single-table format divided into five six-team divisions, blending global football structures with North American sporting traditions. The only month removed from the current spring-to-autumn calendar is June, which often clashed with international tournaments. MLS Cup will move from December to spring, avoiding freezing conditions.
The calendar adjustment ensures players can participate fully in international windows without disrupting club fixtures. Under the previous system, teams often competed without key personnel during simultaneous international calls, and playoffs were interrupted by the November break. This season, Vancouver Whitecaps and LAFC faced three-week gaps between rounds due to international commitments.
Synchronising with European leagues allows MLS clubs to operate within the same primary transfer windows, particularly the summer period when leading players typically move. Previously, mid-season timing hindered American teams’ ability to recruit top talent. The alignment now enables them to compete more effectively for coveted signings on the global market.
