April 13, (THEWILL) – In a tense Europa Conference League quarter-finals first leg on Thursday night, Nice drew 2-2 with Basel at St. Jakob Park, with another spectacular night for Nigeria’s Terem Moffi.
After a slow start from both teams where technical errors were numerous, Basel eventually took the lead through a penalty kick converted by Mohamed Amdouni. Nice managed to even the score thanks to Moffi, who scored a poacher’s finish and an amazing overhead kick, both in the first half.
However, the French team failed to capitalise on their dominance in the second half, and Basel managed to find a winner through an unmarked Amdouni, who headed home a cross from Michael Lang. Nice had chances to restore their lead but were unable to beat Swiss keeper, Marwin Hitz.
The game ended 2-2, leaving the tie open for the return leg next week, with Nice hosting the game. Les Aiglons may have finished off the contest in the second half but they allowed a frail Basel side to come back and take a point from the tie.
The visitors had opportunities to restore their one-goal advantage but they failed to convert them. Both teams will now return to domestic football on Sunday, with Basel taking on Young Boys in the Switzerland Super League and Nice facing Brest.
