August 26, (THEWILL) – Ligue 1 pacesetters, Monaco, were forced to settle for a 3-3 draw away at Nantes on Friday night, in a wildly entertaining match.
The visitors dug themselves an early hole after some poor defending allowed Nantes to race out to a 2-0 lead inside the opening 15 minutes. Monaco pulled a goal back before half-time through Takumi Minamino, but their defensive issues continued immediately after the restart when Nantes restored their two-goal advantage, thanks to Mostafa Mohamed’s second of the night.
The seesaw nature of the match continued as Wissam Ben Yedder and substitute, Myron Boadu, both scored in the second half to bring Monaco level at 3-3. In the end, Monaco had to be content with a point from an error-strewn performance. The draw means they move onto seven points after three matches to sit one point clear at the top of the Ligue 1 table, although they have played a game more.
Nantes, however, earn their first point of the new campaign and climb up to 15th place. Attention now turns to the next round of fixtures. On Friday, Nantes host Marseille, while Monaco will look to return to winning ways when they travel to face Lens on Saturday. Both teams will be hoping for improved defensive displays after this goal-fest.
Based on the evidence of Friday’s match, Ligue 1 fans can expect plenty more entertainment when these two face off again later in the season. Neither side seems capable of keeping a clean sheet at the moment, which should make for an exciting rematch.
