March 04, (THEWILL) – Andy Murray is bringing back Ivan Lendl as his coach for the third time in his career to help him prepare for Wimbledon this year.
Murray and Lendl, an eight-time Grand Slam winner in his own right, formed an incredibly successful collaboration that saw the former world number one achieve his finest results to date. While working with Lendl, Murray won two Wimbledon championships, a US Open, and two Olympic gold medals.
In February, Murray re-entered the top 100 of the ATP rankings. Following the Miami Open at the end of March, Murray will spend several weeks in America training together as he prepares for the grass court season. The Scot is also rumoured to be on the lookout for a second coach to work alongside Lendl.
Murray and Lendl collaborated at the start of the 2012 season before parting ways two years later. They joined again in 2016 when Murray won Wimbledon for the second time, before splitting up again in 2017.
Since breaking with Jamie Delgado in December of last year, the 34-year-old has been hunting for a coach. Delgado flew to Canada to work with Denis Shapovalov, a highly regarded Canadian player.
Murray, who has been hindered by a slew of ailments in recent years, the most serious of which necessitated hip resurfacing surgery, is hoping to reclaim his place at the top of the men’s game.
The Scot signed German coach Jan De Witt on a trial basis in January but ended the trial after being knocked out in straight sets in the second round of the Australian Open by Japan’s Taro Daniel.
Murray was given a wild card into this month’s Indian Wells tournament on Thursday, with the main draw starting on March 10. It is the only Masters 1000 tournament he has not won on a hard surface. The final will be held on March 20, with the Miami Open starting the following day.
As THEWILL previously reported, Murray will forgo the clay court season in favour of the grass court season, which begins in June with Murray’s participation in the Stuttgart Open.
Before starting his Wimbledon campaign on June 27, he is expected to compete in Queen’s (June 13-19) and Eastbourne (June 17-25).
