July 23, (THEWILL) – British tennis star, Andy Murray, has declared that the 2024 Paris Olympics will be his final tournament before retiring from professional tennis.
The 37-year-old made the announcement on social media platform X, on Tuesday.
Murray, a two-time Olympic singles gold medallist, expressed pride in representing Britain at the Games. He won gold medals in London 2012 and Rio 2016, defeating Roger Federer and Juan Martin del Potro respectively in the finals.
The three-time Grand Slam champion has struggled with injuries in recent years, including hip surgery in 2019. Despite a comeback attempt, Murray has found it difficult to reach the later stages of major tournaments.
Murray recently received an emotional farewell at Wimbledon after a first-round doubles exit partnering his brother Jamie. He opted out of singles competition due to fitness concerns following spinal cyst surgery in June.
The tennis competition at the Paris Olympics begins on July 27. Murray will participate in both singles and doubles events in what will be his fifth and final Olympic appearance.
