February 26, (THEWILL) — Nigerian content creator and musician, Nasiru Lawal, popularly known as Nasboi, has opened up about his battle with depression.
In an emotional video shared on Instagram on Wednesday, the entertainer revealed that he had been depressed for a few months after allowing negative comments from critics and trolls to affect him.
According to Nasboi, the constant pressure from people telling him to choose between comedy and music took a toll on his mental health.
“Hey guys, I’ve been depressed for a couple of months. I let the noise get to me; I used to pay attention to the noise. Trolls here and there, saying ‘stop doing music, do your comedy,’ it’s painful, and at the end of the day, these celebrities are human.”
He explained that the criticism made him begin to doubt himself and his abilities.
“I started feeling less of myself, like I wasn’t enough. I started this year saying I would make no jokes anymore when I release my next song, no more comedy, but guess what, I’m not leaving this career for anybody.”
Nasboi admitted that his earlier decision to stop comedy at the beginning of the year was a mistake.
According to him, a post made by a man identified as Alabi reminded him of his worth. The positive message and the encouraging comments under the post reinforced his confidence and reminded him of his talent.
“God has blessed me with everything. I’m a very good actor, I make really amazing skits, and I sing really amazing songs. So, I’m going to do everything through God who strengthens me. It’s time to be confident, it’s time to show the world what I have. I will not let those things stop me.”
Nasboi revealed that he framed the encouraging message as a reminder never to give up. He also made it clear that he would no longer allow trolls to dictate his career path.
“Thank you so much for the love, for the people who checked on me.”
The video has since sparked reactions from fans, many of whom praised his courage and encouraged him to keep pushing forward in his career.
