July 1 (THEWILL) — Netflix is facing backlash for using an AI-generated version of Gene Wilder’s voice in the first trailer for “Wonka’s The Golden Ticket”, a new reality competition inspired by Roald Dahl’s “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”.
The nine-episode series premieres on September 23. Wilder, who played Willy Wonka in the 1971 film, died in 2016.
Netflix recreated his voice with AI voice company ElevenLabs after receiving approval from the Gene Wilder Estate.
In the trailer, the recreated voice welcomes contestants to Wonka’s chocolate factory and introduces the competition. The show follows 12 pairs of contestants competing in physical, mental and moral challenges for a life-changing prize. Rusty Goffe, who played an Oompa Loompa in the 1971 film, also returns for the series.
The decision has sparked strong reactions online. Many fans criticised the use of AI, saying the recreated voice lacks the warmth and emotion that made Wilder’s performance memorable. Others argued that Netflix should have hired a human voice actor instead.
Despite the backlash, Wilder’s estate has publicly supported the project. His widow, Karen B. Wilder, said the family is “delighted” that the series introduces his performance to a new generation while honouring longtime fans.
The controversy comes as Hollywood continues to debate the use of AI to recreate the voices and likenesses of actors after their deaths.
