October 30, (THEWILL) — Newcastle United advanced to the EFL Cup quarter-finals after defeating Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 at St James’ Park on Wednesday evening. The defending champions dominated the round-four tie with goals from Fabian Schar and Nick Woltemade.
Schar opened the scoring in the 24th minute when he rose unmarked above Lucas Bergvall to convert Sandro Tonali’s corner. Poor defending from Tottenham allowed the Swiss defender an easy finish. Harvey Barnes had earlier fired into the side-netting after a promising start from the Magpies.
Spurs created little in response, though Richarlison failed to connect with Bergvall’s excellent low delivery. Barnes then struck over the bar with an ambitious overhead attempt before half-time following good build-up play from Tonali and Malick Thiaw.
Joe Willock wasted a clear opportunity early in the second half, heading wide from Barnes’ accurate cross. However, the midfielder redeemed himself by providing a chipped pass for Woltemade, who powered a header past goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky to double Newcastle’s advantage.
The result sends Eddie Howe’s side through to the last eight of the competition they won last season. Tottenham were unable to test Newcastle’s defence sufficiently and paid the price for their lapses in concentration at set-pieces.
