April 02, (THEWILL) – Newcastle United registered a well-deserved victory against Manchester United with goals from Joe Willock and Callum Wilson at home on Sunday evening.
Having lost to the Red Devils in the Carabao Cup final, the Magpies managed to climb up to third in the English Premier League table with this victory.
The game started with a chance for Sean Longstaff, but he was unable to convert a half-volleyed effort from the edge of the six-yard box. Wout Weghorst came close to opening the scoring for United, but he fluffed the chance to find the back of the net.
Newcastle then started to dominate the game, with David de Gea required to make a wonderful double save to deny Alexander Isak and Joe Willock, to keep the match goalless. Still, the hosts were determined to open the scoring.
Newcastle’s persistence paid off in the 65th minute when Willock scored after Allan Saint-Maximin headed back across the goal. In the 87th minute, substitute Wilson sealed the victory by heading home a Kieran Trippier set piece from the right flank. The Magpies will next travel to West Ham while United will host Brentford in their next EPL fixtures on Wednesday.
