March 05, (THEWILL) — Newcastle United defeated Manchester United 2-1 at St James’ Park, with William Osula’s stoppage-time goal ending Michael Carrick’s unbeaten start in charge of the club.
Carrick had been in line to become only the third Manchester United manager to go unbeaten through his first 10 league fixtures, a distinction previously held only by Herbert Bamlett in 1927 and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2018-19. The defeat also damaged United’s top-four aspirations, with Liverpool and Aston Villa having already dropped points on the same day against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Chelsea, respectively.
The pivotal period arrived deep into first-half stoppage time, which extended to nine minutes despite the fourth official signalling for three. Fernandes responded by curling in a free-kick that Casemiro met with a header to restore parity before the interval, but United were unable to sustain that momentum in the second half. Aaron Ramsdale was called upon twice to prevent a United winner, turning away a header from Leny Yoro and denying Joshua Zirkzee with an acrobatic stop.
The decisive moment came in the 90th minute when Kieran Trippier released Osula down the right flank. The Newcastle forward moved beyond Tyrell Malacia and bent a precise finish past Lammens from the right corner of the area, prompting jubilant celebrations throughout St James’ Park.
