January 07, (THEWILL) – The Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has approved the appointment of Eric Sékou Chelle as the head coach of the Super Eagles. This decision followed a recommendation by the NFF Technical and Development Sub-Committee during a meeting held in Abuja on Thursday, January 2. The endorsement was finalised on Tuesday, January 7.
Chelle, a former Malian international with five caps for the Aiglons, has extensive coaching experience, having managed clubs such as GS Consolat, FC Martigues, Boulogne, and MC Oran. Since 2022, he has been the head coach of the Mali national team, guiding them through a period of notable performances, including a competitive outing at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
At the 2023 tournament held in Côte d’Ivoire, Chelle’s Mali reached the quarter-finals, narrowly losing to the hosts and eventual winners, Côte d’Ivoire, 2-1 after extra time. His team had led by a single goal until the final minute of regulation time, demonstrating strong tactical discipline and determination.
During his playing career, the 47-year-old Chelle featured for prominent French clubs, including Martigues, Valenciennes, Lens, Istres, and Chamois Niortais. His experience in top-tier football has equipped him with the expertise to manage high-pressure scenarios and develop competitive teams.
Chelle assumes his new role with immediate effect and has been tasked with leading the Super Eagles to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals. Nigeria’s next qualifying matches, scheduled for March, will be a key opportunity for him to make an impact and show his managerial capabilities on the international stage.
Chelle’s appointment is expected to bring fresh perspectives to the Super Eagles’ coaching setup, with the NFF confident in his ability to achieve the team’s objectives.
