Nick Reiner, the son of filmmaker and actor, Rob Reiner

June 09, (THEWILL) — Nick Reiner, the son of late Hollywood director, Rob Reiner, has filed a petition seeking access to a trust fund set up by his parents to help cover his legal defence costs.

Nick, 32, is facing two counts of first-degree murder over the deaths of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, who were found stabbed to death at their Los Angeles home in December 2025. He has pleaded not guilty.

In a court filing dated June 8, 2026, his lawyers said the trust is worth about $1.5 million and was created for him, with scheduled payments starting at age 30.

The petition says he did not receive the payment due at that age and is now asking for access to the money for his defence and basic needs while in custody.

“Nick loved his parents, and he is devastated by their deaths”, the filing states. It also says he is presumed innocent and should be allowed to use the money for legal representation.

The filing says the trustee managing the fund has refused to release the money, citing concerns about his ability to handle it. It adds that the trust rules require the payments to be made and that they should not be delayed.

Nick is currently represented by a public defender after defence attorney Alan Jackson withdrew when funding was not available.

Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were well-known figures in Hollywood. They had three children: Jake, Romy and Nick.

Neither Jake nor Romy has publicly supported Nick’s request for access to the inheritance money.

The case is ongoing, and prosecutors have not yet decided whether to seek the death penalty if he is convicted.
