November 19, (THEWILL) — US-based Trinidadian rapper, Onika Tanya Maraj-Petty, popularly known as Nicki Minaj, has publicly supported U.S. President Donald Trump’s claims that Christians are being persecuted in Nigeria.
Minaj, who has repeatedly spoken about the issue in recent months, said her invitation to the event came after her posts on X drew the attention of a U.S. diplomat.
She delivered her remarks on Tuesday while speaking at an event hosted by the United States at the United Nations headquarters in New York.
“In Nigeria, Christians are being targeted, driven from their homes and killed. Churches have been burned. Families have been torn apart, and entire communities live in constant fear simply because of how they pray”, Minaj told the audience.
Standing beside U.S. Ambassador to the UN, Mike Waltz, she said the call to protect Christians was not about taking sides or dividing people, but about “uniting humanity”.
Minaj also praised Trump for prioritising the issue, saying no group should ever be persecuted for practising their faith.
Describing Nigeria as “a beautiful nation with deep faith traditions” that she hopes to visit, Minaj reiterated her commitment to speaking out against injustice.
“It’s about what I’ve stood for my entire career, and I will continue to stand for that for the rest of my life”, she said.
Her comments follow Trump’s announcement that he intends to designate Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern”, his warning that the U.S. could deploy troops if the government fails to stop the killing of Christians.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian government has repeatedly dismissed allegations of Christian persecution, arguing that ongoing violence results from terrorism, banditry, and communal conflicts affecting all citizens regardless of faith.
