October 21, (THEWILL) – The National Boxing Federations of Nigeria, Finland, Iceland, Jamaica, Norway and the Czech Republic have become the latest to have their membership applications approved by World Boxing.
World Boxing is the recently established international Federation aiming to keep boxing at the heart of the Olympic Movement. The new body now has 22 members spanning all five Olympic continents.
Nigeria is the first African nation to join and will be eligible to participate in World Boxing’s inaugural Congress in Frankfurt this November. The Congress will have at least as many members as the equivalent 1946 gathering that founded the International Boxing Association (AIBA), now known as IBA.
The six newcomers went through a strict vetting process covering areas like democratic elections, anti-doping policies, dispute resolution, formal recognition and delivering boxing programmes. Their applications were accepted by World Boxing’s Executive Board and will be ratified at the Frankfurt Congress.
All members can attend the Congress and nominate candidates for leadership positions. They will have voting rights in offices like the President, committees and the Executive Board. World Boxing Secretary General, Simon Toulson, welcomed the new members, saying it demonstrated the Federation’s growing global support and desire for change in the sport. He said World Boxing aims to gain IOC recognition and preserve boxing’s Olympic status.
