November 08, (THEWILL) — Violence once again marred Nigerian football when Nana Abraham, a Barau Football Club player, was stabbed in the neck by a pitch invader during a league match at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium in Katsina on Saturday. The attack occurred shortly after Barau equalised in the 69th minute of their away fixture against Katsina United, a goal that appeared to enrage sections of the home crowd.
The incident unfolded moments after Barau’s Orji Kalu levelled the scores at 1-1, prompting at least one individual to storm the pitch armed with what club officials described as a sharp object. Ahmad Gwale, Barau FC’s director of media operations, confirmed that the assailant, believed to be either from the Katsina United bench or amongst their supporters, struck Abraham on the neck before security personnel could intervene.
Match officials immediately halted play to allow medical staff to attend to the wounded player, though the stoppage proved brief. Abraham was substituted in the 71st minute, and despite the violent disruption, the match resumed and concluded with the 1-1 scoreline intact. Photographs circulating on social media showed the injured player lying on the turf with blood staining his neck area. The club has since confirmed that Abraham is receiving medical treatment, though the full extent of his injuries remains unclear.
This latest episode of football-related violence comes barely a month after similar chaos erupted at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano, where Shooting Stars of Ibadan were attacked by furious Kano Pillars supporters following a 94th-minute equaliser. The Nigeria Premier Football League subsequently imposed severe sanctions on Kano Pillars, including a N9.5 million fine, a three-point deduction, and the indefinite closure of their home stadium. Earlier this year, Vincent Temitope, a Plateau United striker, was also stabbed in the neck by an angry fan at the Lafia City stadium in Nasarawa.
Neither Katsina United nor the NPFL management have issued an official statement regarding Saturday’s attack, leaving questions unanswered about what measures, if any, will be taken to protect players and restore order to a league increasingly overshadowed by violence. The recurring nature of these incidents raises urgent concerns about spectator control, stadium security, and the future of professional football in Nigeria.
