August 08, (THEWILL) – At the current Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, Team Nigeria won the 4×100 metre Women’s Relay competition on Sunday at the Alexander Stadium in a team consisting of world 100-metre hurdle record holder Tobi Amusan, Favour Ofili, Rose Chukwuma and Grace Nwokocha.
The group won Nigeria’s 11th gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham by setting a new African Record of 42.10s when they crossed the finish line with Nwokocha holding firmly to the lead and the baton.
Amusan had got things going for Nigeria and skillfully transferred the baton to Ofili, who finished second in the 200-metre final race on Saturday. Chukwuma received the baton from Ofili before passing it on to the anchor leg runner Nwokocha, to take to the end for the gold.
So far, Nigeria has equaled her best-ever performance at a Commonwealth Games tournament with 11 gold medals. There is the possibility for more because Team Nigeria is on track for at least two more gold medals before the end of the Games.
