April 21, (THEWILL) – French side OGC Nice crashed out of the Europa Conference League after letting their lead slip in the final minutes of regulation time against Swiss side FC Basel (1-2, agg. 3-4).
The result meant that no French teams progressed beyond the quarter-final stage in any European competition this season. Nice dominated the game from the beginning, with their first goal ruled out for offside, but they finally broke the deadlock and scored a well-struck finish through Gaetan Laborde.
That ninth minute lead held on until Basel found the equalizer in the 80th minute. The Swiss side then took advantage of Nice’s wastefulness to seal the game in extra time through Ghanaian Kasim Adams. Terem Moffi, who started the match, was substituted in the 73rd minute for Nicholas Pepe, who was returning from injury.
Nice’s exit from the competition could have potentially grave consequences for France’s UEFA coefficient as no French teams are left in European competition this season. Next up, Nice will face Clermont Foot in Ligue 1, while Basel will play against Luzern in the Switzerland Super League.
