
March 22, (THEWILL) – The Nigerian film industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran actress, Nkechi Nweje.
Nweje reportedly passed away on Friday after a brief illness, with her death confirmed on Saturday by film producer, Stanley Ajemba, popularly known as Stanley Ontop.
Ajemba, in a heartfelt Instagram post, expressed deep shock over her passing, describing Nweje as a vibrant actress and a close friend.
“Nollywood is in tears as we have lost one of our vibrant actresses, @nkechi.nweje, after a brief illness. I couldn’t post since morning because it felt like a dream to me. Ezigbo Nwanyi Onitsha, rest in peace, ma’am. My best friend, she always called to advise me. The last time we spoke was during the Queenth saga, she told me, ‘Ontop, stop.’ I’m still speechless,” he wrote.
Renowned for her portrayal of motherly roles, Nweje featured in several Nollywood productions, including Royal War, Festival of Sorrow, and Coming Back from Congo.
Her death marks another major loss for the Nigerian film industry, leaving colleagues and fans in deep grief.
