June 24, (THEWILL) – The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has extended Rita Ushie Uguamaye’s service year by two months after she posted a video in March, criticising President Bola Tinubu’s administration and Nigeria’s worsening economic conditions.
After the video went viral, Uguamaye was called to a disciplinary hearing by NYSC officials, but the session was postponed despite her appearance with activist, Omoyele Sowore.
With only one month remaining in her service, Uguamaye was called to the NYSC camp in Iyana Ipaja, Lagos, last week, where she reportedly apologised to officials.
As a disciplinary consequence, her service was extended by two months.
According to Jonathan Ugbal of the Take It Back Movement – who has been in contact with Uguamaye’s family – he confirmed the service extension and noted her distress over the decision.
The NYSC has not yet issued an official statement on the matter.
