SAN FRANCISCO, June 14, (THEWILL) – An Islamic organisation, Da’awah Coordination Council of Nigeria, DCCN, on Wednesday condemned the conduct of some training exercises in orientation camp by the Nigerian Army and the National Youths Service Corps, NYSC, during the ongoing Ramadan fast.
National President of the council, Malam Lawal Maidoki, told newsmen in Sokoto that “despite pleas, appeals and protests”, the two organisations have continued to subject young Nigerian Muslims to the rigours and trappings of their respective camps during the Ramadan period.
According to him, “This act of insensitivity betrays the contempt with which Islam and its sanctity are being treated by such common national symbols as the Nigerian Army and the NYSC, among many others.”
“As Muslim organisations, we consider the scheduling of the selection and the training exercises by the duo as a deliberate attempt of short-changing the Muslim youth.”
Maidoki however stated that they do not support the exemption of Muslim youths from the rigours of the training in Ramadan period as it would amount to denial of their fundamental opportunity to get exposed to the diverse skills.
He held that the only solution was to avoid all training and selections on NYSC orientation camps during the period of Ramadan.
The DCCN President went on to call on the Muslim Ummah to utilize the period of Ramadan “to pray to live to witness a better Nigeria, where all Nigerians will be treated equally”.
